Stairmaster Stepmill Workouts Stairmaster Stepmill Workouts
Jen, you have a new Stairmaster at the Two Rivers Y and there’s been a little controversy and discussion recently about the saftey and sensibility of walkiing backwards on it.
Below is something that I cut and pasted from the people who make and market the machine—

Rotational Climbing
Because the stepmill provides a solid surface on which to place your feet, you don’t have to just walk normally on the equipment. To stay focused and involved in your workout, change your stepping pattern every minute. Start walking straight up the stairs, then turn sideways, grapevining your legs up the steps. If you turn to the left, step up with your right foot, and cross your left foot in front of your right to step to the next stair. Step out with your right foot to continue climbing. Make sure the steps are moving slowly during this sequence. After another minute, making sure to use the handrails for balance, turn backward and continue walking up the steps backward. After another minute, turn a quarter-turn again, so that you step up the stairs sideways leading with your left foot.
