You can live well, have fun and get fit, all at the same time. Fall is one of my favorite seasons, the leaves on the trees are changing, the mornings are crisp, the evenings are warm, and it’s the season of pumpkins! Here are six of my favorite fall fun activities to enjoy while burning a few calories to boot:

Walk or run 3 miles on your favorite bike path – Duck Creek or Ben Butterworth: Burn 275-580 calories. A brisk walk or jog can burn an average of 100 calories a mile. Pick a beautiful neighborhood, river or bike path route and enjoy the beauty around you! – * Jogging, 5 mph 584 calories burned/ Walking, 3.5 mph 277 calories burned

Hike it – Try any of these great outdoor hiking options in the Quad Cities:

  • Black Hawk State Historic Site, Rock Island, or Wildcat Den State Park, Muscatine, which offers 423 acres of glorious fall scenery. The trails wind through various terrain offering spectacular views along the way
  • At Loud Thunder Forest Preserve in Illinois City, the Hauberg Trail East Branch and West Branch combine to form over two-miles of moderate level hiking through the scenic forested areas along the river.
  • The Sac-Fox Trail is an approximately 12-mile, continuous loop, moderate level hiking trail (that is about 5200 calories* if you hike the whole 12 miles!). Get outside breath some fresh air and enjoy what these trails have to offer – *Hiking 438 calories burned

Be a kid – Go to a park for a picnic. Grab a blanket and pack a healthy lunch and go enjoy a Saturday with your family. For your activity you can enjoy the swing sets, monkey bars or play tag. Just all that running around you can burn about 200 calories*!

Bike it – Grab your bike, helmet and ride along the river! The Ben Butterworth Parkway and Duck Creek Bike Path are both friendly to the everyday cyclist and if you ride your bike for an hour plan on burning about 300 calories! – *Bicycling, < 10 mph, free online auto insurance quotes leisure 292 calories burned

Walk for apples – Stones Apple Barn & Shady Knoll are both located just off Hubbard Rd in Hampton, IL. You can buy apples pre-picked and bagged for you or take a hay rack ride out to the orchard and pick your own. Shady Knoll has a pumpkin patch, petting zoo, hayrack rides, corn maze, and plenty of other things to keep the family busy. *Walking, 2 mph 183 calories burned

Bike or walk to your local farmer’s market – Freight House Farmers Market in Davenport or Growers Market in Moline and East Moline. Shop Local, Shop Fresh! Get on your bike and ride from Downtown Moline to the Freight House a 15-mile round trip and burn about 600 calories*!
