July 31 -Wyatt Earp’s “Olde West” DayCORRAL YOURSELF a good time at Wyatt Earp’s Birthplace Historic House Museum on Saturday, July 31, from noon to 4 pm in Monmouth, IL for “Olde West Day.” Ranch wagon grub, kids’ games, horseshoes, western costume prizes, auctions, a flea market with free spaces, and a horse demonstration with balloons are being planned. The MR high school madrigal group with Kevin Ferry will sing from 1 to 2 pm. The historic 1881 O.K. CORRAL RE-ENACTMENTS begin at 2 pm in the corner corral. The Shady Creek Shootists will perform the authentic showdown, which helped the lawmen, Wyatt Earp and his brothers, Virgil and Morgan, along with Doc Holliday, clean out the outlaw cowboys in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. Some seating will be provided, but visitors may want to bring blankets and chairs. The show will go on rain or shine, and the rain site for a downpour will be at the 1st Street Armoury. August 12-14 -Great River Tug Fest24th annual Great River Tug Fest! This is the only tug-of-war across the mighty Mississippi River. On Saturday from 1-3 pm, barge traffic, pleasure boats and paddleboats yield the right of way to a 2,400 foot, 680 pound rope that stretches between LeClaire, Iowa and Port Byron, Illinois. Eleven teams from each side are formed and the side with the most winning teams takes the Alabaster Eagle trophy for that year. A family weekend event filled with carnival rides, live entertainment, a huge parade, scenic 5k run/walk, food, arts and craft vendors and one of the largest fireworks displays (Fri. night) in the two state area. August 13-14 -Ya Maka My WeekendA celebration of Caribbean culture, the festival brings the islands to the Quad Cities. Featuring nationally known, as well as regional, reggae and steel drum bands. August 20th through 29th – Columbus Replica Ships Open HouseThe Nina was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools. Archaeology magazine called the ship the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built. Pinta was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours. The Pinta is available for private parties while in port. Both ships tour together as a new and enhanced sailing museum for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the caravel, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world. While in port, the general public are invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission charges are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $5 for students. Iowa’s Native Turtles and Fascinating FirefliesAt 7pm, join AmeriCorps naturalist Katie vander Linden to learn about Iowa’s many different native turtle species. We will take a short trip to the Osprey aquatic lab to do some turtle trapping. There will be live specimens available for viewing. Then at 8:30pm, Katie vander Linden turns her attention to teaching about fireflies. We will take a hike to our prairie to get up-close and personal with these unique creatures.
